The minimum income amount depends on your filing status and age. In 2022, for example, the minimum for single filing status if under age 65 is $12,950.  If your income is below that threshold, you generally do not need to file a federal tax return. Single filing status:
  • $12,950 if under age 65

  • $14,700 if age 65 or older

Married filing jointly:
  • $25,900 if both spouses under age 65

  • $27,300 if one spouse under age 65 and one age 65 or older

  • $28,700 if both spouses age 65 or older

Married filing separately 

$5 for all ages

Head of household:
  • $19,400 if under age 65

  • $21,150 if age 65 or older

Qualifying widow(er) with dependent child:
  • $25,900 if under age 65

  • $27,300 if age 65 or older

You might also be required to file for other reasons, such as if you’re self-employed or paid on a 1099-MISC form, or bought health insurancefrom a state or federal marketplace. If you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return, separate filing thresholds apply. Please see IRS Publication 501 for additional information.

If You're an Employee (W-2 Worker):

  • W-2 Form: Provided by your employer, showing wages earned and taxes withheld.

If You're an Independent Contractor (1099 Worker):

  • 1099-NEC: Shows income received if you earned $600 or more from a client.

  • Business Expense Records: Receipts and logs for deductible expenses (e.g., supplies, mileage, home office).

  • Bank Statements: To verify income and expenses.

  • Quarterly Tax Payment Records: If you made estimated payments.

Other Common Documents:

  • Personal Information: SSN or ITIN for you, your spouse, and dependents.

  • Identification: Driver’s license or government-issued ID.

  • Healthcare Forms: 1095-A, 1095-B, or 1095-C if you had health coverage.

  • Retirement Contributions: Records of IRA or 401(k) contributions.

  • Education Expenses: Form 1098-T for tuition or 1098-E for student loan interest.

  • Childcare Expenses: Provider’s name, address, and EIN/SSN.

  • Direct Deposit Info: Bank account and routing numbers for refunds.
